DAR ES SALAAM CITY AND ITS SURROUNDING BIKE TOURS ;
Dar es Salaam is the business capital of United Republic of Tanzania. Dar es Salaam, is an Arabic word means “HEAVEN OF PEACE”. Dar es Salaam has become an urban after Sultan Sayyid Majid of Zanzibar decided to develop the area’s inland harbor into a port and trading centre, and named the site Dar Es Salaam, how ever the Sultan died and the town sunk again into anonymity, over shadowed by Bagamoyo, an important dhow port to the north. It wasn’t until 1880’s that Dar Es Salaam assumed new significance, first station for Christian missionaries making their way from Zanzibar to the interior of the mainland, and then was a seat for the German colonial
government, which viewed Dar Es Salaam’s protected harbor as a better alternative for steamships than the dhow port in Bagamoyo. In 1891 the colonial administration was officially moved from Bagamoyo to Dar Es Salaam.Since then,the city has remained Tanzania’s undisputed economical and political capital, even though the legislature and official sesat of the government were transferred to Dodoma in 1973.
